The Start of a Roller Coaster Streak

Today I played seven games.  Most of them were single table sit and go for a $1.10 buy in.  The first one was a little slow going but patience persevered and I finished in the top five for a win of $0.90.  This game was so slow that I almost fell asleep.  Luckily I was able to wait everyone out to come out with that gain.  The next single table sit and go was just as slow.  I started to get a little anxious and started to try to force some bluffs through to knock down some players chips.  that did not work and I finished sixth, which is one away from winning some money.

After dropping me wife off so she could do a work out, I came back home and started another single table sit and go game.  This game was taking forever but with knowing I had an hour before I had to pick her up, I started to play.  Only one play went out in about fourty minutes.  That is when I got a call from my wife asking me to come pick her up.  This is the part that every guy can learn from.  In order to avoid an argument with my wife that was over something that didn't really matter, I posted to the table that I had to go pick her up.  When we got home I found myself just going all in on the big blind.  "Oh no", was the thought that came to mind.  I thought I was done for and out.  This would have had me finishing 7th overall.  Luckily I won that hand and then got really hot.  I mean smoking hot.  I finished in the top five to take a $0.90 gain.  This left my account sitting nicely at $10.60.

With being up $0.60, I figured I would play in the Micro Mania sit and go with a buy in of $0.55  and 36 players.  If you look at my stats on www.oprankings.com, you will notice that I actually finished in the money for one and won the other one that I have played.  I took my sweet time with this one, trying to be as patient as possible.  So I made it to the final table, thinking I was in good shape to be in the money.  This is when I started to get anxious.  I started to take some risks in an attempt to get into the money sooner.  It completely backfired on me and I ended in seventh place, just one place short of coming away with some money.

One thing I have noticed is that whenever you are on Poker Stars and starting to gain some momentum, it's like the program knows and just shuts you down.  I did find the following on their website:

Game Integrity

  • How does your shuffle work? How do I know that it is fair?
  • PokerStars deals the cards in a fair and honest manner. Once the deck is shuffled, it is set, and the order in which the cards are dealt cannot be changed. The software that shuffles and deals the cards cannot control who wins or lose; it just deals the cards and the rest is up to the players in the game. Our software produces a shuffle that is completely random, which favors no player over any other. The methods we use ensure complete randomization of the cards, and complete unpredictability of the cards to come. You can see the description of these methods at:

    http://www.pokerstars.com/poker/room/features/security/

We arranged for the largest consulting firm specializing in software security and quality, Cigital, to review PokerStars shuffle. Their investigation found the shuffling to be fair and random. You may read about their analysis at:

    http://www.pokerstars.com/poker/rng/

Should you have further questions regarding our shuffle or security of our software, feel free to ask any question you would like in an email to support@pokerstars.com. The integrity of our games is paramount to our success, and we are happy to address any concern you may have.

Keep in mind that this is what Poker Stars has to say about their shuffle.  Also if you ever watch poker on TV, you will notice that sometimes a player gets lucky on the turn or the river which could be considered BS.  It happens.  There is no way to avoid it other than a simple solution, which is not to play.

With that out of the way, I played a couple more single table sit and go with a $1.10.  One of them I finished just one player shy of winning some money. The last one I did before sitting and writing about my games for the day had me finishing seventh again.  It is funny about what I posted about the shuffle due to how I ended up going out of the last single table game I played.  I had the win at the turn, no way did I think I was going to lose the hand.  Then out of the blue the river card is the card the other player needed in order to beat me.  Kind of ironic isn't it?  Has anyone else had that happen?  Everything was going well and I just needed two more to go out.  I went from the chip leader to finishing seventh.  Talk about a let down.  I wonder if anyone else has had such a thing happen.  Please post in the comments if you have had this happen to you.

The last game I  played prior to composing this post was a NL Hold'em with a $0.25 buy in and 45 players.  things started extremely slow for this but luckily I had half of the Green Bay Packers game to watch while playing this tournament.  Things started out okay and before I knew it I had take out three players and was in second place.  I started to slow down and fold a lot of hands.  Things were moving nicely and then I got down to the last three tables.  I started to lose and lose with some crappy hands.  I continued to fold most hands.  Then it was down to two table.  Then down to twelve players left and I was bringing up the rear in twelfth place.  I tried to keep going and I managed to stay alive with a few all-in hands.  But then my luck ran out.  I went all in making one last attempt to make it to the final table.  This did not go well and I finished 11th.

Over all today started out nicely with winning a few games and being up $0.60 then going down just to go back up $0.90 and that is when I started on a losing streak again and just could win the single table games.  I think I will do a couple more games to try to get back to even for the day and finish on a good note.  Please feel free to leave any question or comments.  Like always, may the poker gods smile upon any table you play at.
