Play Money Tournaments versus Real Money Tournaments

So after a week of losing I decided to  do some "play" money tournaments.  I have done these in the past and had $400 or so in "play" money.  I figured that I would play a tournament that cost $200 in "play" money.  After a few hands I was actually the chip leader.  I started to think that any minute I am going to start to lose it all.  Before I new it, the game was down to myself and another player. I finished the tournaments in second place and won around $2,500 in "play" money.  With being surprised by this amount, I decided to give the "play" money tournaments another chance.  I found one that had a $2,111 or so buy in.  I figured why not.  It's not like this is real money so if I lose i'm not out anything.

After registering I had to wait a little bit for the registration to close.  Once the registration closed the tournament started.  I started of okay.  After a while things started to pick up.  I was winning more hands and bigger and bigger pots.  As this tournament continued, I waited for some good cards and then I was in a "heads-up" situation again.  Then a few hands later, the tournament was over and I won.  Now my "play" money account is over $5,000.  If only it was real money.

After the luck with my "play" money account, I figured it was time to make a deposit and get back to some real cash games.  I decided to deposit the minimum amount of $10.  This is an amount that won't make my wife mad at me for. Once I deposited this I figured I would play at some single table sit and go games with 10 players.  The first one was going okay.  I knew I had a winning hand and the other play who was still in decided to bet.  So what do I do?  Some would think to fold when the bet is greater then the pot.  This may be a good idea in real tournament play, but online is a different story.  With all the crazy hands I've seen this week and last month.  I decide to raise against his bet and the other player folded.  Therefore scaring him away and leaving me to win the pot.  After about an hour of playing, we just needed one more player to go out and we would all be credited $2,00.  Once again there was a player sitting out who decided to play now.  What this player didn't realize is that he was only playing when he thought the cards he had in his hand were the winning cards.  I even  made a comment about this so the other players would now.  So it came down to myself and this guy as the only players still in this hand.  I was dealt pocket Kings.  He was dealt a K and something else.  The flop gave both of us another K.  Sadly for him, it gave me three of a kind.  The turn and river cards did not matter and I took him out to end the game with $0.85 gain.

This win made me feel good, especially since it ended with me taking out one of those people who like to sit out all the time.  With feeling good, I decided to play in the Micro Mania tournament.  This required a $0.55 buy in.  I figured since I won one of these last year and placed high enough to win some money that I would give it a shot.  Before the tournament started I reminded myself to be patient.  I need to play the good cards and fold the bad ones.  I also reminded myself not to try to force the win like I notice I was doing in the past.

So the tournament started.  I was off to a good start with taking out another player, then another, then another.  I ended up taking out four players and was off to a great start.  But like all good things, they sadly come to an end.  I finished 28th over all out of only 36 players.  Not good.  I was disappointed and figured I should just go back to playing single table games till I build up some winnings.

So the next single table sit and go tournament I played had a $1.10 buy in.  I ended up with pocket 9 not once but two times in a row!  Who gets the same two cards two times in a row?  I folded the first ones but decided to stay in for the second set that I was dealt.  I ended up with three of a kind.  Not bad, I thought, then before I knew it, I was out of the game.  Taken out by a straight that I did not notice on the table.  How stupid was that?  I should have noticed but was to busy being surprised at having the same two cards two times in a row.  So now I was down to $9 and some change.

The next sit and go I registered was another $1.10.  This one was no different then the other one.  More bad cards for me all game long.  I finished just one short of winning some money.  There were two who were all in with me, one had a pair of Qs and the other one had a pair of Ks all before the flop.  So the flop comes and it is three Jacks.  Wow, nothing like a full house with three Js and a pair of Ks.  I was done.  There was no way I was going to come back from this one.  So for the second time I lost the $1.10 I bought in with.

The next sit and go I entered was also $1.10 single table game.  Thinking about all the games I registered to, all but one was a sit and go tournament.  This one, however, I did a lot better.  Rather then getting in a rush to finish it and move on, I took my time.  I waited for good cards to play and did a lot better.  This one was kind of uneventful and I finished in the top five for a $0.90 gain.  This took my account back up to just under $9.  I entered another sit and go for $1.10.  These single table sit and go games are fun to play.  These are very easy to win, if you are patient enough.

While playing this last game, I was dealt a pair of 5s.  I sat there with the thought of "what do you do with a pair of 5s?"  Well, some would say play them, and others would say fold.  I would say check and see what happens.  So I decided to call and see what cards come up.  No one raised against the blinds so I was very lucky to be able to see the flop.  Sadly, the cards that should up did not help me one little bit.  So I ended up folding.  This turned out to be a good thing since the other two players went all in and ended the game.  I finished with another $0.90 gain.

Over all the day was not that bad.  I finished with $9.90 in my account.  This was not that bad considering how the rest of the week went.  I will probably end up playing one more hand tonight which, if I am lucky, I will finish ahead.  AS always good luck with your game and may the poker gods smile upon each game you play.
